READ THIS IF YOU SUFFER FROM BACK PAIN OF ANY KIND:
If you suffer from back pain of any sort, you MUST read this and read it carefully, it’ll save your life.
***And if you’re think you’re TOO OLD to make a big change in your life, please see the video of my dad below, he’s 64 and he kicks ass and does handstands. It’ll inspire the crap out of you!***
The intent of this post is to get you to do something NOW and not spend another second in PAIN.
You or NO ONE deserves to live a subpar life always in pain.
The current solutions out there are all just band-aids and explain to you exactly why…later. You might get some temporary relief in the short term, but that’s about it.
Here’s the long term solution:
Start by acclimating yourself with the TVA (Transverse Abdominal) muscle. It’s literally our body’s built in “weight belt”….you know what I’m talking about, like what those bodybuilders wear at the gym.
The TVA muscle is also the muscle that “acts first” in all movements that we do, whether that be running, walking, swimming, jumping, flipping, handstands, you name it….the TVA muscle acts first and it’s the primary stabilizer in our body…when it’s working properly.
When it’s not working properly here’s what happens:
First, let’s look at the muscles underneath the TVA.
The TVA is shaped like a cylinder or a ring (but it doesn’t quite complete the loop, more on this later).
Underneath or inside your TVA you have your spine and you have your hip flexor muscles that run up and connect to your lower back (the big hip flexor being the psoas).
Again, the TVA is *supposed to be* your primary stabilizer. When it isn’t, what’s underneath it or inside of it takes over….that’s right, your hip flexors.
While the hips are meant to do some stabilizing, and are meant to work in tandem with the TVA, if they have to do all or most of the stabilizing because your TVA isn’t working properly, very bad things start to happen….
The hip flexors will be constantly overused, overworked, and overstressed.
Guess what this means? They stay PERPETUALLY TIGHT no matter what you do….
Read this next part carefully:
There’s no amount of stretching you can do to open up abused hip flexors. This is why you can stretch or practice yoga daily and your hips don’t change one iota.
That in and of itself causes annoying back pain. Your tight and abused hip flexors are constantly tugging on your lower back all day long. Ouch.
And what makes it even worse is that exercise is actually a trigger for this.
Your hip flexors will essentially seize up even more during exercise and then you’ll have that immediate pain or your back will “lock up” and that makes you feel like you need to stop.
And you know this if this happens to you, it happens daily and…
…it sucks!
That’s just the start.
Over time, it gets worse.
Eventually, the tightening of your hips gets so bad, it’s starts to physically tilt your pelvis. This is called anterior tilt. The front of your pelvis tilts down and the back tilts up. This creates pressure on your entire spinal column. You’re essentially compressing your entire spine. Not good.
Essentially, it’s like putting your entire spine between a giant vice grip and having pressure applied to both ends CONSTANTLY.
This forces the exaggerating of the curves of your spine at both ends. It’s extremely painful.
It’s like being in a room waiting to die with the walls closing in on you. That’s what’s happening to your spine when your TVA isn’t working.
It gets better, the degradation continues.
We all have what’s called a hamstring attachment point. It connects our hamstrings to our hips (right on the bottom of the pelvis)
When our pelvis starts to tilt (even slightly), we raise the natural hamstring attachment point location.
For some of us, just that alone hurts a lot. Simply tugging on the tendon that connects the bone all day long hurts.
But it does something else. It’s prevents us from accessing our hamstring muscles all together.
So when ever we even try to stretch. Nothing. Nothing but a sharp pain in the hamstring attachment.
If your hamstring attachment point is pulled up higher than it should be as a result of a tilted pelvis because our hip flexors are overworked and overstressed because our TVA isn’t working properly and doing the stabilizing, we CANNOT access our hamstrings at all and they get very tight.
And unfortunately, because most think the extent of hamstring stretching is “forward folds”. They just pile on the pressure and the pain not just on the lower back but on the hamstring attachment point trying to “open up” their hamstrings by folding….when that isn’t the real problem at all.
In this case, trying to stretch your hamstrings does more harm than good.
Ok, so remember how I talked about how the TVA is a ring shape that doesn’t quite complete the full circle?
What finishes that circle is your QL muscles. Called the Quadratus Lumborum. Your “lower back” muscles.
Like the hips flexors, when the TVA isn’t working properly the QL will ALSO try to help with the stabilizing in the body in things as simple as walking.
And guess what?
Your QL muscles aren’t meant to be primary stabilizers either!
They also connect right to your lower back.
When they start dominating stabilizing, they get extremely tight and this creates a further “compressing” effect on your lower back. More pain.
Like the hips, when the QL muscles are in constant stabilizing mode, they are overworked, overstretched, and abused constantly.
There’s no amount of stretching you can do to “outstretch” this pain. That’s another very short term solution that actually causes MORE PAIN in the long run.
When the QL muscles are stressed and abused, they contract and shorten. Not only pulling on your lower back but your rib cage and pelvis as well.
Your QL muscles connect the top of your pelvis to the bottom of your rib cage.
The way us humans are designed we have a set natural distance between our hips and our ribs.
When the QL muscles are stressed and abused from over stabilizing, they contract and shorten.
Guess what?
This effectively “shortens” the distance between your hips and your rib cage, making your shorter.
This is why old and sedentary people shrink as they age.
Because the TVA basically atrophies when it’s not being used (and this is the normal by the way), the QL has to do most of the stabilizing in tasks even as simple as walking.
This is why if your doctor ever tells you, “you need to slow down in your old age”, you should NEVER EVER LISTEN.
That’s a one way ticket to hell and essentially accelerates the dying process.
And because the muscles in the body work synergistically, abused, tight and shortened QL muscles create a cascading effect down the entire back.
Essentially, your QL muscles pull down on your rib cage and your lats, your lats pull on your rhomboids, which pulls on your traps, which pulls on the neck which puts a constant EXTREME amount of pressure on your neck.
Not only do you have constant neck and shoulder pain. Your posture degrades as well.
Bad posture, chronic neck pain, shoulder pain, migraine headaches all of this is a result of a chronically overstressed and abused QL as a result of having a weak and “not firing” TVA.
In the absence of a properly working TVA muscle, the hip flexors and QL both work overtime to pick up the stack.
Every human body is different.
If you experience pain first in your lower back, you’re a person who’s hip flexors have taken over doing the primary stabilizing in the body.
If you experience pain first in your neck or cervical spine, you’re a person who’s QL has taken over the primary stabilizing in the body.
It’s never just one or the other, it’s alway both, just one tends to take over more than the other which determines where you’ll experience pain first.
HEED THIS WARNING
You never experience pain at just one end of the spine, if you don’t do something about it NOW, it’s only a matter of time before you have pain on both ends.
If you IGNORE THE TVA, you’re in for a world of pain. Any other thing you possibly try to fix to the pain you’re in is just a band-aid, it’s a short term solution that will NEVER fix the underlying problem.
Now be honest with yourself here…
How does it feel to be in fear daily that your back will act up in the middle of doing something you love?
How does it feel to not be able to exercise at all?
How does it feel to feel older than you actually are?
How does it feel to not be able to SHOW UP for your kids and loved ones because you can’t move?
Flat out, how does it feel to wake up every morning knowing that you CAN’T be the very best person you know you’re capable of being because you’re always in pain????
I don’t even know why I’m asking you all these questions, I already know the answers….IT SUCKS!
We only have ONE LIFE, why aren’t YOU doing everything you can to live an EXTRAORDINARY life?

You can actually access your hamstring muscles again. Freedom.
All that tugging and constant chronic pain on your lower back. VANISHES!
Your spine is no longer in a vise grip!
BOOM!
Next, as a result of now having a properly trained and firing TVA your QL release and it too no longer has to do all the stabilizing in your body!
More magic happens…
When the QL release, it lengthens.
And when it lengthens, you INCREASE the distance between your hips and your rib cage.
You actually grow taller!
Yes, it’s entirely possible to grow an inch or two. I’ve seen this happen with my own eyes over and over and over again! It’s amazing!
More importantly when the QL releases, the downward cascading effect in your back and spine stops.
Your neck and shoulder pain GOES AWAY for good! And, your posture resets. Congratulations, you can now stand up straight again! And no more migraines either!
And it gets even better….
